On Wednesday 12th November 2014, the Sustainable Advice in Hackney project hosted a second Community Information Session, this time on Family Law. More than 85 people from across the local community and Hackney advice sector attended the session, which took place at Hackney Town Hall.
We decided to put on a session covering family law, as since the removal of legal aid from many family law areas, many Hackney residents, advice providers and community leaders (such as the Rev Matt Wall, curate of St Mary's Church in Stoke Newington, pictured above) have been inundated with enquiries from people going through divorces, or who are being denied access to their children, or who have ended a relationship and are not sure of how to divide up shared financial assets.
The session was run for us pro bono by expert family law barristers from Thomas Bingham Chambers, with contributions from Traymans Solicitiors who are based in Hackney.
The session covered:
- how parents can manage contact with their children following divorce or separation;
- the role of family mediation;
- how parents can enforce a court order for contact with their children;
- what can happen to shared financial assets when couples (married or unmarried) split up;
- what to do if you’re a grandparent or extended family member who wishes to stop a grandchild/child relative from being taken into care;
- your legal rights as a domestic violence victim; and
- what to expect when attending a family court hearing.
The barristers prepared excellent handout materials to accompany the session which you can download and print off by clicking HERE. A further handout designed to assist people attending court to understand the practicalities of the day can also be downloaded HERE.
The Sustainable Advice in Hackney project is extremely grateful to Thomas Bingham Chambers and Traymans Solicitors for delivering such an informative and helpful session.
